Kentucky Derby 2006 Heats Up

With less than a week to go to the 132nd Kentucky Derby, there's lot's of hot horse racing buzz and gossip out there regarding the big contenders, the trainers, the owners, the appropriate clothing for watching your horse win (or whatever), Kentucky Derby odds, and anything else having to do with "the most exciting two minutes in sports". Here's some of today's hot topics:

  • Online sports betting outlets report that the 2006 Kentucky Derby is expected to draw the largest number of wagers ever. Thank God (as usual) for the Internet.
  • As if the prestige and prize money isn't enough, I notice that Kentucky-bred horses that win either the Kentucky Oaks or Kentucky Derby get an extra $100,000. Or rather, the owner does: hope a victorious horse from Kentucky gets at least an extra carrot for their consideration.
  • Mister Triester is out of this year's Derby. Mister Triester finished third in the Kentucky Derby trials held on Saturday. This opens the way for Flashy Bull to enter the race.
  • Trainer Michael Matz and jockey Edgar Prado have buried the hatchet over an incident stemming from the Arlington Million in 2004. This means that Prado will be riding hot horse Barbado on May 6th. His best performance in the Kentucky Derby is third, when he rode Peace Rules.

Anything but the end of Kentucky Derby pre-race hype -- I'll keep you posted! Already looking forward to the Preakness Stakes. Watch out for Preakness possible Bernardini, from the Darely Stable. Looking hot at Aqueduct, where he made winning the (G3) Withers Stakes look easy.
